Jared Matthew serves as the Senior Pastor at First Baptist Church. Jared loves the Gospel! His desire is to encourage the body of Christ toward Gospel-centered ministry and to help believers learn how the Gospel works for, in, and through them as they make Jesus the center of their lives.
Jared and Emily grew up in farm country just outside of Lancaster, PA. Jared graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Missions from Northland International University in 2008. Emily studied piano at Ambassador Baptist College. After their marriage in July 2010 Jared and Emily moved to Minnesota to pursue seminary training. Jared enrolled in the Master’s of Divinity program at Central Baptist Theological Seminary, and graduated in May of 2016.
Jared and Emily currently reside in Faribault. Jared and Emily are foster parents for Rice County and love having children in their home! They have adopted one child through foster care and are in the process of adopting three more. They have two energetic puppies—Chip and Molly. Both Jared and Emily love to run! They have both completed marathons and enjoy all things outdoors, especially running, biking, and hiking in the nearby parks and nature centers. They also enjoy a relaxing afternoon picnic in the park and the sweet smell of a campfire.
Jared is involved in the local Rotary Club in Faribault. Both Jared and Emily use Rotary, foster care, and their love for the outdoors to build connections with those in their community.
Get To Know Our Pastor
What do you do when you run? I usually listen to podcasts or audiobooks. Sometimes I'll listen to sermons. Running is a great opportunity to decompress and get the blood flowing!
What do you do with your spare time? I enjoy all things outdoors, but particularly love running, cycling, hiking, and fishing. Most of my spare time is either spent on the trails or spending time with my wife and our children.
Who is your greatest inspiration in ministry? Tough question! I can think of several former pastors who have contributed to my ministry understanding and philosophy. For preaching, I love listening to sermons by John Piper, John MacArthur, and Matt Chandler.
How long does it take you to prepare a sermon? It depends on the passage! I would say the average sermon takes anywhere from 8-12 hours. Some passages are easier; others are more difficult and require more preparation time.
What is your favorite food? I like a lot of foods! Tacos and pizza are the first that come to mind. I also enjoy a nice juicy burger. Coffee is also near and dear to my existence, and my wife and I enjoy trying various flavors of coffee!
Do you play any instruments? Yes! The guitar is currently my main instrument, but I also play the ukulele. On occasion I have been known to dust off and toot my trombone. My wife and I both sing and enjoy ministering in music together.
Do you have a favorite quote? I can think of many that have impacted me, but I think one that has stuck with me through the years is what William Carey said: Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.
What is your worst nightmare in ministry? That I'll wake up on a Sunday morning and realize I forgot to prepare a sermon!
